Seasonal Picks
Every stock in your list ranked by how it has done in one calendar month (this month unless you pick another) over up to 15 past years.
Examples taken from the live lists on 2 Oct 2026. Prices and rows change every hour; the steps do not.
What this tab finds
Seasonal Picks answers one question: in past years, which stocks usually rose during this calendar month, and by how much? It takes every stock in the universe you have picked at the top of the page (Nifty 200 unless you changed it), looks up how each one did in the chosen month in every past year on record, and ranks them.
It opens on the current month. On 2 Oct 2026 that is October, so the page reads "147 stocks ranked for Oct · Nifty 200 · 10+ years": 196 of the 200 Nifty 200 stocks have October history, and 147 of them have at least 10 Octobers behind them.
- One row per stock, at most 200 rows on screen.
- Ranked by one number you choose (Rank by): average move, how often it rose, average move per unit of risk, average best point in the month, or smallest average dip.
- Only stocks with at least the number of years you set in Min sample (10 by default).
- The left sidebar's filters and search also apply, so you can rank one sector, one price band and so on.
- Clicking a symbol opens that stock's Analysis page with the same month in focus, so you can see every year one by one.
Keep in mind. This is a history finder, not a forecast. A stock that rose in 13 of 14 Octobers can fall this October. Use the list to decide what to study, not what to buy.
How the numbers are worked out
For each stock and each past year, the engine takes the month's daily candles and reduces them to one monthly candle: the open of the first trading day, the highest high, the lowest low and the close of the last trading day. Everything is measured from that first open.
| Number | How it is worked out for one year |
|---|---|
| Month's move (close) | (last close − first open) ÷ first open × 100. This is open-to-close, not close-to-close: the previous month's last close is not used. |
| Upside | (highest high in the month − first open) ÷ first open × 100. How far it got above where the month started. |
| Drawdown | (first open − lowest low in the month) ÷ first open × 100. How far it dipped below where the month started, written as a positive size. |
Then the years are combined:
- Avg Close: the plain average of the yearly moves.
- Hit ratio: years that closed up ÷ (years up + years down). A year that closed exactly flat counts in Sample but not in the hit ratio.
- Sample: how many years had a valid October (or whichever month) candle.
- Avg Upside and Avg Drawdown: the averages of the yearly upside and drawdown figures.
- σ (standard deviation): how widely the yearly moves are scattered around the average.
Which years: the window is the last 15 calendar years up to this one (2011 to 2026 on 2 Oct 2026), with 2020 left out because the Covid crash and rebound would distort most months. Prices are adjusted for splits and bonuses. A month that has not finished is not in the published numbers: on 2 Oct 2026 the October figures stop at October 2025, so the most years any stock can show for October is 14.
Example
RADICO in October, worked by hand (data as of 2 Oct 2026)
RADICO's October candles, first open → last close: 2011 122.00 → 124.45 (+2.01%), 2012 119.50 → 119.60 (+0.08%), 2013 136.05 → 146.15 (+7.42%), 2014 77.25 → 90.95 (+17.73%), 2015 85.35 → 101.85 (+19.33%), 2016 121.00 → 140.80 (+16.36%), 2017 168.40 → 219.25 (+30.20%), 2018 340.20 → 393.45 (+15.65%), 2019 315.50 → 316.55 (+0.33%), 2020 left out, 2021 879.90 → 1,119.25 (+27.20%), 2022 1,044.00 → 1,041.85 (−0.21%), 2023 1,205.00 → 1,216.90 (+0.99%), 2024 2,030.00 → 2,379.00 (+17.19%), 2025 2,884.80 → 3,131.50 (+8.55%). That is 14 years. Add the 14 moves and divide by 14: +11.63%, which is RADICO's Avg Close. 13 were up and 1 (2022) was down, so the hit ratio is 13 ÷ 14 = 93% (92.86%). The average of the 14 upside figures is +17.52% and of the 14 drawdowns 3.85%. Notice that no single year was +11.63%: four years were under +1%, and 2017 and 2021 were near +30%.
Open it on the site →Tip. Because the average can be pulled up by one or two huge years, always glance at Hit ratio and σ next to it. The Analysis page (click the symbol) also shows the best and worst year.
Reading a row
Each row is one stock's record for the chosen month. Every column header is a link that sorts the table by that column; click it again to flip the order. The ? beside some headers opens a short explanation.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Rank | Its place in the ranking by the Rank by number. It stays fixed when you sort by another column, so you can always see where a stock stood. |
| Symbol | The NSE symbol, with the sector underneath. Click it to open the stock's Analysis page for this month. |
| LTP / Chg % | Last traded price and the day's change, refreshed every hour in market hours. |
| Avg Close | The average open-to-close move in this month across the years. Green if positive, red if negative. |
| Hit ratio | The share of years the month closed up. Green at 65% or more, amber from 50% to 64%, red under 50%. |
| Sample | How many years of this month the numbers rest on, e.g. 14Y. |
| Avg Upside | On average, how far above the month's first open the stock got at its highest point that month. |
| Avg Drawdn | On average, how far below the month's first open the stock dipped at its lowest point that month, shown with a minus sign. |
| Confidence | A traffic light (strong, moderate or weak) with σ, the scatter of the yearly moves, beside it. See the Confidence section. |
Example
Reading RADICO's row (Nifty 200, October, 2 Oct 2026)
Rank 2 · RADICO · FMCG · Avg Close +11.63% · Hit ratio 93% · Sample 14Y · Avg Upside +17.52% · Avg Drawdn −3.85% · moderate, σ 10.3. In words: over 14 Octobers it rose on average 11.6% from the first open to the last close, it closed October higher in 13 of them, on average it got 17.5% above the open at some point in the month, and on average it dipped 3.9% below the open at some point. The traffic light is moderate, not strong, because the yearly moves are widely scattered (σ 10.3, above the 5 that strong needs).
Open it on the site →Tip. Avg Upside and Avg Drawdn are averages of each year's extreme, and they did not happen on the same day. A stock can show +17% upside and −4% drawdown even though in a given year it dipped first and rallied later, or the other way round.
The controls at the top
| Control | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rank by | Avg Close % (default) · Hit ratio · Risk-adjusted (mean / stdev) · Avg Upside · Min Avg Drawdown | Picks the number that orders the table. Ties are broken by Confidence (strong before moderate before weak), then by the larger Sample. |
| Period | Jan to Dec (opens on the current month) | Which calendar month to rank. Pick Nov to look ahead at next month's history. |
| Min sample | 3Y · 5Y · 8Y · 10Y (default) · 12Y · 15Y | Hides every stock with fewer years of this month than you choose. |
| Save scan | A name and an optional note | Shown when you are signed in and have changed something from the defaults. Saves the current page with its settings as a named link. |
| Universe (top of the site) | Indices, ETFs, Commodities, Currencies, Nifty 50, 100, 200, 500, Nifty F&O, Midcap 100, Smallcap 100, sector indices, and your watchlists | Which list of stocks is ranked. Nifty 200 unless you changed it. |
What each Rank by choice means:
- Avg Close %: biggest average move in the month first. Rewards size; can be pulled up by one huge year.
- Hit ratio: most often up first. Rewards consistency; says nothing about how big the moves were.
- Risk-adjusted (mean / stdev): Avg Close divided by σ. Rewards a decent average that does not swing wildly from year to year. RADICO: 11.63 ÷ 10.33 = 1.13.
- Avg Upside: the biggest average high point above the month's open first. Useful if you trade the swing inside the month rather than holding to month end.
- Min Avg Drawdown: the smallest average dip below the month's open first. Useful if you want months that historically did not shake you out early.
Tip. Every setting is in the page address: by= for Rank by, m= for the month (1 to 12), n= for Min sample, sort= and dir= for a header sort, u= for the universe. A link you copy reopens exactly the same view.
Why the number of years matters
A stock that rose in 3 out of 3 Octobers has a 100% hit ratio, and it means almost nothing: three coin tosses can easily come up heads three times. With 10 or more years, a pattern has had to survive different markets: rate hikes, elections, bull runs, sell-offs. That is why Min sample starts at 10Y.
Example
What shows up when you lower Min sample to 3Y (Nifty 200, October, 2 Oct 2026)
At 10Y, 147 stocks are ranked. At 3Y, 187 are. The newcomers include PAYTM at rank 15 (Avg Close +8.2%, up 3 of 4 years, Sample 4Y), IRCTC at rank 17 (+7.81%, up 4 of 6, 6Y) and KALYANKJIL at rank 18 (+7.68%, up 4 of 5, 5Y). Four or five Octobers are a few stories, not a pattern.
Open it on the site →Example
15Y returns nothing in October
The window is 2011 to 2026 without 2020, and October 2026 has not finished, so no stock has more than 14 Octobers. Choosing 15Y for October on 2 Oct 2026 gives 0 stocks. For months that have already finished this year (January to September), 15 years are possible.
Open it on the site →Keep in mind. More years is not automatically better. A company that merged, demerged or changed its business keeps its old price history under the same symbol, so 14 Octobers may partly describe a different company.
The Confidence light
The Confidence column combines three things into one light, using fixed thresholds:
| Light | Rule |
|---|---|
| ● strong (green) | At least 10 years, hit ratio 70% or more, and σ (scatter of the yearly moves) 5% or less. |
| ● moderate (amber) | At least 5 years and hit ratio 55% or more, but not strong. |
| ● weak (grey) | Everything else. |
Example
Why RADICO is only moderate (October, 2 Oct 2026)
RADICO has 14 years and a 93% hit ratio, which pass the strong test, but σ is 10.3: its Octobers ranged from −0.21% to +30.20%. That scatter is above 5, so it is moderate. BEL (Avg Close +5.13%, 11 of 14 up, σ 5.14) misses strong by a hair for the same reason.
Strong is rare. On 2 Oct 2026 not one Nifty 200 stock was strong for October. Across every published stock and index, only eight October rows were: two stocks in the Nifty 500 (RAMCOCEM and THERMAX), one ETF, and indices such as NIFTYPHARMA and NIFTYMIDCAP100. Most stocks move too much from year to year to pass the σ test.
Keep in mind. Green means the history is consistent. It does not mean this year will follow it.
Opening one stock: the Analysis page
Click any symbol. It opens that stock's Analysis page with the same month in focus. Analysis shows the full year-by-month grid: every year as a row, every month as a column, each cell the month's move, with an Avg row and an up/down count row underneath.
- Four cards for the focus month: Hit ratio (with years up and down and the confidence word), Avg Close, Avg Upside (with the best year) and Avg Drawdown (with the worst year).
- Unit: Percent or Points. Basis: Open (the same as Seasonal Picks) or PrevClose (measured from the previous month's last close, like TradingView). Prices: show the actual high and low.
- Focus ‹ › steps one month at a time. Hover a cell for that year's open, high, low, close and trading days; click it for the daily chart.
- Stock page → opens the stock's own page, where the Chart tab shows its trendlines.
Example
RADICO's October on Analysis
Open RADICO from the October list. The Avg Drawdown card names the worst October: 2022, −0.2%. The Avg Upside card names the best: 2017, +30.2%. Read down the Oct column and you see the four near-flat years (2011, 2012, 2019, 2023) that the +11.63% average hides.
Open it on the site →Tip. Analysis can fold today's trading days into the current month, so during October its October card may show one more year (the unfinished 2026) and a slightly different average than the Seasonal Picks row. The Seasonal Picks row only counts finished months.
Scenarios, step by step
1. The biggest average movers this month.
- Open Seasonal Picks. It opens on this month, ranked by Avg Close %, 10Y minimum.
- Read the top rows, then check Hit ratio and Confidence beside each.
- Click a symbol to see its year-by-year history before trusting the average.
Example
Nifty 200, October, by Avg Close (2 Oct 2026)
1 ADANIENSOL +12.9% (8 of 10 up, 10Y) · 2 RADICO +11.63% (13 of 14) · 3 CANBK +10.42% (11 of 14) · 4 BANKINDIA +10.2% (10 of 14) · 5 FEDERALBNK +10.16% (11 of 14) · 6 INDIANB +10.16% (11 of 14) · 7 ADANIPOWER +10.13% (10 of 14). ADANIPOWER is a warning case: its average is +10.13% but its median (middle) October is only +4.2%, because October 2018 alone was +96.17%. One year is carrying the average.
Open it on the site →2. The most reliable risers (how often, not how much).
- Set Rank by to Hit ratio.
- Keep Min sample at 10Y or higher, so a 4-for-4 newcomer cannot top the list.
- Compare Avg Close: a high hit ratio with a small average means small but regular gains.
Example
Nifty 200, October, by Hit ratio (2 Oct 2026)
1 RADICO 93% (13 of 14, +11.63%) · 2 MUTHOOTFIN 86% (12 of 14, +4.19%) · 3 SUZLON 86% (12 of 14, +8.9%) · 4 ADANIENSOL 80% (8 of 10) · 5 BEL 79% (11 of 14, +5.13%). MUTHOOTFIN and SUZLON have the same hit ratio but very different behaviour: SUZLON's worst October was −16.63% (2024), MUTHOOTFIN's −3.43% (2024).
Open it on the site →3. Good average without wild swings.
- Set Rank by to Risk-adjusted (mean / stdev).
- The top rows have the best average per unit of year-to-year scatter.
Example
Nifty 200, October, Risk-adjusted (2 Oct 2026)
1 RADICO (11.63 ÷ 10.33 = 1.13) · 2 BEL (5.13 ÷ 5.14 = 1.00) · 3 ICICIBANK (7.58 ÷ 8.08 = 0.94) · 4 ADANIENSOL (0.90) · 5 MCX (0.85). BEL and ICICIBANK, nowhere near the top by Avg Close, rise here because their Octobers were steadier.
Open it on the site →4. Only stocks with 12 or more years of history.
- Set Min sample to 12Y.
- Stocks with 10 or 11 years drop out; the rest keep their order.
Example
Nifty 200, October, 12Y+ (2 Oct 2026)
146 stocks ranked. ADANIENSOL (only 10 Octobers) leaves, so RADICO moves to rank 1, followed by CANBK, BANKINDIA, FEDERALBNK and INDIANB, all with 14 years.
Open it on the site →5. One sector's seasonal leaders, using the sidebar.
- Click Filters at the top of the left sidebar.
- Under Company → Sector, pick Pharma, then click Show (or Apply).
- Seasonal Picks now ranks only Pharma stocks in your universe. Change Rank by as usual.
Example
Pharma in Nifty 200, October (2 Oct 2026)
12 Pharma stocks ranked. 1 DIVISLAB +4.46% (11 of 14 up, 79%) · 2 SUNPHARMA +1.72% (7 of 14, 50%) · 3 DRREDDY +1.52% (9 of 14, 64%) · 4 AUROPHARMA +0.88% · 5 CIPLA +0.85%. Only DIVISLAB has a strong-looking October record; the rest are close to a coin toss. That is a useful answer too.
Open it on the site →Tip. You can also pick a sector universe (Nifty Pharma, Nifty Bank, Nifty IT and so on) from the universe box at the top of the site instead of the sector filter.
6. Only stocks that rose in this month at least 80% of the time.
- Open Filters → Seasonality, type 80 in "Rose in Oct, in at least __% of years", and apply.
- Keep Rank by on Avg Close % to order those reliable stocks by size of move.
Example
Nifty 200, October, rose in 80%+ of years (2 Oct 2026)
From the October numbers, the stocks at 80% or more with 10+ years are RADICO (93%), MUTHOOTFIN (86%), SUZLON (86%) and ADANIENSOL (80%). Ranked by Avg Close: ADANIENSOL, RADICO, SUZLON, MUTHOOTFIN.
Open it on the site →7. Check one stock's month-by-month history.
- Click the symbol in the table.
- On Analysis, read down the focus month's column year by year; look for the down years and whether they cluster recently.
- Use the Focus ‹ › arrows to see the months either side: a strong October after a weak September tells a different story from a stock that is strong all autumn.
Example
CANBK in October
CANBK ranks 3 by Avg Close (+10.42%, 11 of 14 up). Its best October was 2017 (+30.59%) and its worst was recent: 2024, −7.56%. Opening Analysis lets you see whether the last few Octobers still look like the older ones.
Open it on the site →8. Combine with Trendline Support: a good October history and price sitting on a monthly trendline.
- Pick a name from the list, e.g. by Risk-adjusted.
- Click the symbol, then Stock page → on Analysis, and open the Chart tab. Pick Monthly in the timeframe pills.
- See whether price is sitting just above a rising support line. The chart guide explains how a 1-month line also shows on the weekly and daily charts.
- Or go to the Trendline Support tab, which lists stocks sitting on a trendline right now, and look for names that also rank here.
Example
ICICIBANK: October history plus a monthly support line (2 Oct 2026)
ICICIBANK ranks 3 by Risk-adjusted in October (Avg Close +7.58%, up 11 of 14, σ 8.08). On its Monthly chart there is a rising support line at about ₹1,287.11, touched 6 times, and the last price was ₹1,310.60 (1 Oct close): 1.83% above the line, marked as touching. Two independent reasons to look at it. Neither says it will rise; if the price closes the month below the line, the chart picture has changed whatever October's history says.
Open it on the site →See also: /guide/chart#other-timeframes for reading a monthly line on the weekly and daily charts.
9. Look ahead at next month.
- Change Period to Nov.
- The ranking now uses each stock's November history, so you can prepare a watchlist before the month starts.
Example
Next month's view
On 2 Oct 2026, choosing Nov ranks the Nifty 200 by its Novembers from 2011 to 2025 (2020 left out). Save the view with Save scan if you are signed in.
Open it on the site →What this tab does not tell you
- Whether it will happen this year. Past months are history. Results, news, the wider market and the stock's own chart can override any seasonal habit.
- The worst case. There is no worst-year column on this page; the average hides it. Open the stock: the Analysis page's Avg Drawdown card names the worst year for the month (RADICO's October: 2022, −0.2%; SUZLON's: 2024, −16.63%).
- Why. A stock may rise in October because of festive demand, results timing, or pure chance. The tab only counts.
- Intra-month timing. Avg Close is first open to last close. A stock can end the month up after falling hard in the first week; Avg Drawdn gives the average size of that dip, not when it happened.
- Whether the history is still relevant. A company that changed business, merged or was re-rated can carry an old pattern that no longer applies. Recent down years (look on Analysis) deserve extra weight in your judgement.
- Costs and slippage. The numbers are raw price moves.
Keep in mind. Never treat a high rank as a buy signal. Seasonal Picks finds stocks worth studying; it does not predict, and a stock that rose in 13 of 14 Octobers can make this the 2nd down year.
Glossary
| Term | Meaning here |
|---|---|
| Seasonality | The tendency of a stock to move a certain way in a certain calendar month, measured across past years. |
| Avg Close | Average of the yearly moves from the month's first open to its last close, in %. |
| Hit ratio | Years the month closed up ÷ years it closed up or down. Flat years are left out. |
| Sample / Min sample | Number of years of this month behind the numbers / the fewest years a stock needs to be listed. |
| Avg Upside | Average of each year's highest point in the month above the first open, in %. |
| Avg Drawdn (Drawdown) | Average of each year's lowest point in the month below the first open, in %. |
| σ (sigma, stdev) | Standard deviation: how scattered the yearly moves are. Small σ means the years were similar to each other. |
| Risk-adjusted | Avg Close ÷ σ. Higher means more average move per unit of scatter. |
| Median | The middle year when the yearly moves are sorted. Shown on Analysis, not on this page; far below the average means one or two big years are lifting the average. |
