Inside Bars

A big candle, then smaller candles inside it: price coiling before it picks a side, on 1 hour to monthly charts.

Examples taken from the live lists on 2 Oct 2026. Prices and rows change every hour; the steps do not.

What this tab finds

Inside Bars lists stocks whose price is coiling: one candle (the mother) followed by one or more candles that stayed inside its range. It checks eight charts per stock - 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour, Daily, 3 day, Weekly, 2 week and Monthly - and shows how many inside candles each one has right now.

  • Mother candle: the last full candle before the pause. Its high and low are the two prices that matter.
  • Inside candle: a later candle whose high and low stay within the mother's range and whose close stays inside it. A wick may poke out by a sliver (0.10 of a normal candle's range, called ATR); a close outside ends the coil.
  • Breakout: the newest closed candle closed above the mother's high (up, ↑) or below its low (down, ↓). It is shown on that one candle, then the row goes.

Only closed candles count. A stock needs at least 20 full candles on a chart before that chart is judged. The scan is published with the trendlines: after the evening refresh, and on every live update during the session.

Example

A stock coiling on six charts at once, 2 Oct 2026 (data as of the 1 Oct close)

ABB, last price 6,900: 5 inside candles on 1 hour, 2 on 2 hour, 2 on daily, 10 on weekly, 4 on 2 week and 5 on monthly. Its tightest coil was the daily one: mother candle of 29 Sep, 6,660.5 to 6,953.

Reading a row

One row per stock. Each timeframe column holds a small cell; a dot means no coil on that chart at your settings.

ColumnWhat it shows
StockThe symbol - click it for the chart with the coil boxed. Beside it, a mark when a trendline sits on the tightest coil's edge: ⟋ rising, ⟍ falling, — flat, followed by under (on the mother's low) or above (on the mother's high). With Within set, a second mark such as ⟍ 0.13%: the line that kept the row and its distance from the price.
LTPLast traded price.
1H 2H 4H 1D 3D 1W 2W 1MThe number of closed inside candles on that chart. ≈ after the number: a wick used the 0.10 ATR allowance. ▸: each inside candle smaller than the last. ↑ or ↓ before it: the newest candle closed beyond the mother. Three or more inside is shown in bold. Hover a cell for it in words.
TFsHow many timeframes are coiling (or breaking out) at your settings.
TightestThe tightest mother on any chart: its range as a per cent of price, then in ATR of its own chart, then which chart. Smaller ATR means a tighter coil for that chart.
Mother high / lowThe tightest coil's mother high and low, then how far the price is from each. Above the high is the long trigger, below the low the short.

Example

One row, read left to right (2 Oct 2026)

ABB · — under — above · LTP 6,900 · 1H 5 · 2H 2▸ · 1D 2 · 1W 10 · 2W 4 · 1M 5≈ · TFs 6 · Tightest 4.39% · 1.67 ATR · 1D · Mother 6,953 / 6,660.5, -0.76% / +3.60%. In words: the price is 0.76% under the daily mother's high and 3.60% over its low, and flat trendlines sit on both edges (hover: 4 trendlines under the coil, the best a 5-touch 1 hour line; 2 above, the best a 7-touch 4 hour line).

The controls

The sidebar's universe and filters narrow the stocks first; then the control bar asks the question. Every control is kept in the page address, so a view can be bookmarked or kept with Save scan. This tab has no filter row under the column headers.

ControlChoicesWhat it does
Min inside1+ (default) · 2+ · 3+ · 4+ · 5+Closed candles that must have stayed inside. Two or three is a real coil; one is only a pause.
On at least1 timeframe ... 8 timeframesHow many charts must be coiling at once.
TimeframeAny timeframe · 1 hour · 2 hour · 4 hour · Daily · 3 day · Weekly · 2 week · MonthlyKeeps stocks coiling on that chart; the chart opens on it.
(no label) Coils and breakoutsCoils and breakouts · Coiling now · Broke out ↑ · Broke down ↓Still coiling, or the newest candle closed beyond the mother.
(no label) Near-inside tooNear-inside too · Exact onlyNear-inside lets a wick poke through by 0.10 ATR. Exact only drops those.
(no label) Any coilAny coil · Shrinking onlyShrinking: two or more inside candles, each smaller than the one before.
WithinAny · Touching · 0.25% · 0.5% · 1% · 2% · 3%How far the nearest live trendline may be from the current price - Trendline Support's own control. Touching is the engine's test in ATR, not a per cent.
Line atAny · Under the coil · Above the coil · Either edgeA trendline sitting on one of the coil's two trigger prices: under it, on the mother's low; above it, on the mother's high.
Line shapeAny · Rising ⟋ · Flat — · Falling ⟍Which way that line runs. With Within set it describes the line near the price; otherwise the line at the edge Line at picks.
SortMost timeframes · Tightest range · Stock A–ZMost timeframes is the default, then tightest.

The line over the table says every narrowing in words, for example "with a falling line touching the price" or "with a rising line under the coil". If nothing passes, the empty message tells you what to loosen.

Tip. Clicking a stock in the left pane opens its chart here (the address gets ?s= and the symbol), even when the table is not listing it. If it has no coil at all, the chart opens with the Coils layer on and says so.

Within and 'Line at': two different questions

Both controls are about trendlines, but they ask about different prices.

  • Within asks about the price NOW: is the stock's last price close to a live trendline (on the chart you picked under Timeframe, or on any chart)? The row then prints the line's shape and distance, e.g. ⟍ 0.13%. Hover it for the chart and touches.
  • Line at asks about the COIL: does a trendline land on the mother's high (above the coil) or the mother's low (under it)? That is the exact price where a close would end the coil. The engine counts lines within a quarter of a candle's range of each edge.

They read as one sentence: Within = Touching with Line shape = Falling is "a falling line touching the price"; Line at = Above the coil with Line shape = Rising is "a rising line above the coil". Use both together for "a falling line touching the price and a line above the coil".

Example

Within, on the daily chart (2 Oct 2026)

Timeframe = Daily, Within = Touching, Line shape = Falling. SRF was listed with ⟍ 0.13%: a 5-touch daily falling line 0.13% from the price, touching it. Its daily coil: 2 inside candles under a mother of 29 Sep (2,417.9 to 2,498.7).

Open it on the site →

Keep in mind. A coil can sit far from the price even when a line is on its edge. Within is the control that says how far the price itself is from a line.

Timeframes

Inside candles are counted on eight charts: 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour, Daily, 3 day, Weekly, 2 week and Monthly. These are the same candles the trendline charts draw, so a 2-week candle here is the 2-week candle in the popup. The chart strip in the popup also offers 15 min, 30 min, 2 month and 3 month; those show the plain chart with its trendlines, without counting coils.

A short leftover candle (the last part of a session, or a part-period) is never a mother or an inside candle - it is small because it is short, not because price coiled.

Example

The weekly coil with the price already outside it

AWL on 2 Oct 2026: a weekly coil of 2 inside candles under a mother from the week of 7 Sep (181.00 to 189.09), yet the last price, 175.43, was 3.08% below the mother's low. The weekly coil stands until a WEEKLY candle closes below 181.00; the week in progress does not count until it closes.

Open it on the site →

Breakouts of the mother high or low

When the newest closed candle closes above the mother's high, the cell shows ↑ and the number of inside candles before it, in green; below the mother's low, ↓ in red. This is reported on that candle only. On the next closed candle the coil is over and the row drops off that chart.

  • The pill that reads Coils and breakouts: Broke out ↑ lists only upward breakouts; Broke down ↓ only downward ones.
  • Closes, not wicks: a wick through the high that closes back inside is still a coil.
  • The popup says it in words: Closed above the mother after N inside.

Example

Daily breakouts on the 1 Oct close

Across the 523 symbols published, only 2 daily upward breakouts against 84 downward ones. TATACOMM closed at 1,683, above its 29 Sep mother high of 1,674.1 (+0.53%), after 1 inside candle. AADHARHFC closed at 448.4, above 443.95, while its weekly chart was still coiling.

The chart (click a stock)

Clicking a stock opens its candle chart on the Timeframe you picked, or else on its tightest coil. It is the site's one chart, with the coil marked on it.

  • The coil box: the mother candle and everything after it is shaded, from the mother to the newest candle.
  • Mother high and mother low: drawn as two heavy dashed lines with price tags. These are the two triggers.
  • The strip: each chart speed shows its inside count beside it where there is one, so you can step from Daily to Weekly and see each coil.
  • Under the chart, in words: the inside count, the mother range in % and ATR, "long above" and "short below" with distances, and any trendline the engine counted on either edge.
  • Layers works as on every chart: averages, levels, coils on other charts, round numbers, and trendlines from slower timeframes.
  1. Click the stock name.
  2. Read the line under the chart: the mother range and the two trigger prices.
  3. Step the strip to a slower chart to see whether that one coils too.
  4. Open Layers and, under Trendlines from, tick a slower timeframe to lay its lines across these candles.

Example

A weekly line on the daily coil

ABB (2 Oct 2026) opens on its daily coil. In Layers, tick Weekly or Monthly under Trendlines from: the slower chart's lines are drawn over the daily candles, so you can see whether one runs through the coil box. ABB's 2-week coil had 11 lines on its low edge, the best a 7-touch monthly rising line. More in the chart guide.

Scenarios, step by step

Real rows from 2 Oct 2026 (a market holiday; data as of the 1 Oct close). Numbers will have moved by the time you read this.

1. A tight coil on daily and weekly at once.

  1. Set Min inside to 2+ and On at least to 2 timeframes.
  2. Leave Sort on Most timeframes.
  3. Look for rows with numbers under both 1D and 1W.
  4. Click the stock, read the daily box, then click 1W on the strip.

Example

ABB

Daily: 2 inside, mother 29 Sep, 6,660.5 to 6,953 (4.39%, 1.67 ATR). Weekly: 10 inside under a mother from the week of 13 Jul, 6,715.5 to 7,924.5. Price 6,900 - inside both. AWL showed the same pair (daily 2, weekly 2≈).

2. A coil with a trendline on its high.

  1. Set Timeframe to Daily and Min inside to 2+.
  2. Set Line at to Above the coil.
  3. Optionally set Line shape to Falling ⟍ for a falling line on the trigger.
  4. Click the stock; the line under the chart names the best line on each edge.

Example

SRF

Daily: 2≈ inside under a 29 Sep mother of 2,417.9 to 2,498.7; price 2,486.2, 0.50% under the high. The engine counted 5 trendlines on the high, the best an 8-touch 2-hour falling line, and 4 on the low, the best a 9-touch monthly flat line.

3. Breakouts today.

  1. Change the Coils and breakouts pill to Broke out ↑ (or Broke down ↓).
  2. Set Timeframe to Daily to see the day's closes.
  3. Read Mother high / low: how far price closed beyond the trigger.

Example

TATACOMM

↑1 on the daily: closed at 1,683 after one inside candle, 0.53% above the 1,674.1 mother high. On the same close 84 stocks broke down on the daily and only 2 broke out.

4. Only the tightest kind: shrinking coils.

  1. Change the Any coil pill to Shrinking only, and Near-inside too to Exact only.
  2. Sort by Tightest range.
  3. Open the top rows and check the inside candles getting smaller in the box.

Example

ABB 2-hour

2▸ on 2 hour: two inside candles under the 1 Oct 09:15 mother (6,727.03 to 6,939.28), each smaller than the last, every candle strictly inside.

5. Weekly coils only.

  1. Set Timeframe to Weekly and Min inside to 2+.
  2. Click a stock: the chart opens on the weekly box.
  3. Remember the current week only counts once it closes.

Example

AWL weekly

2≈ on the weekly under a 181.00 to 189.09 mother, with a rising 4-touch weekly line on its high - while the price, 175.43, was already under the low intraweek.

6. A coil next to a line right now.

  1. Set Within to Touching (or 0.5%).
  2. Set Timeframe to the chart you trade, e.g. Daily.
  3. Read the second mark beside the stock, e.g. ⟍ 0.13%: the line and its distance.
  4. Click the stock; the chart draws that very line even if it is a retest.

Example

SRF, touching a daily falling line

⟍ 0.13%: a 5-touch daily falling line, touching the price, while the daily coil (2 inside) is 0.50% under its mother high.

What this tab does not tell you

  • Which way a coil will break. An inside-bar coil says the price paused; it does not say up or down.
  • That a breakout will follow through. A close above the mother is reported on that candle only; the tab does not follow it afterwards.
  • Anything about the candle still forming. A coil stands until a CLOSED candle ends it, even if the live price is already outside the mother.
  • Volume. Inside Bars counts ranges, not volume - for volume, see Volume Burst (/ignition).
  • Whether a trendline on an edge will hold. It says a line is there, how many touches it has and on which chart.

Keep in mind. This is a finder, not a forecast. Nothing here is advice to buy or sell; set your own risk before acting on any coil.
